A Message From Amy Heng (Puppy)
This is my 2nd year participating as a volunteer for UCLA Unicamp! Last year I was a mountain biking specialist. For 7 days I took kids riding in and around camp as well as spending extra time with the kids who never learned to ride or were not strong riders. It was the most rewarding and exhausting experience I've ever had.
This year I will be participating in the mental health session. As someone who is majoring in psychology and sociology, I've always been interested in mental health and fitness. Those with mental illnesses should never be stigmatized. For this week of camp, I pledge to promote positive attitudes and dialogue as well as open the doors for seeking help when you need.
Just like everyone else, I've had struggles with mental health and fitness. For me, coming to UCLA was the best decision of my life but it also made me face realities I used to ignore. My insecurities and struggles led me to seek help with UCLA's CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services). It was when I finally had a safe place to confront my issues did I feel like I belonged not only at UCLA but here right now. These topics are not easy to address but they are important because during the moments when you feel most alone, you need to look up at the love that surrounds you. I can't wait to make a difference this summer with UCLA Unicamp.
