A Message From Sandra Ngo
As many of you might know, last year, I joined an organization at UCLA called UniCamp. Officially, UCLA UniCamp strives to change the lives of hundreds of Los Angeles’s urban youth through providing the opportunity for them to spend a week in the summer up at Camp River Glen. However, personally and realistically, UniCamp is so much more than that. It’s an irreplaceable and life changing opportunity for love, growth, and empowerment – for both its volunteers and the campers we serve.
UniCamp as a whole has 8 different session, each with its own objective. Some support college readiness, while others explore grief management, health and fitness, and even mental health for LGBTQ teens. For the second year in a row, I will be volunteering with “AcademiCamp”, a session rooted in social justice for education.
Growing up, I’ve always had a love for learning – and I have my former (and present) classmates, teachers, and schools to thank for that. However, upon arriving at UCLA, I realized that’s not the case for everyone, and often times, it’s a consequence of the injustice that certain students face in the education system. I really believe in combatting that, and AcademiCamp is a start. Spefically, AcademiCamp works with middle and early high schoolers from UCLA’s community schools, such as Horace Mann. We engage in onsite tutoring during the school year, and up at camp, math and reading lessons are integrated throughout the week.
However, the price of UniCamp is not cheap. Each volunteer strives to fundraise $500 (the price to send one camper to camp!) Last year, with your help, I was able to fundraise $800, and I’m looking to do even better this year! UniCamp not only holds a special place in my heart, but in those of many UCLA volunteers and campers we serve. Please help make UniCamp a reality!!
In Support of UCLA UniCamp
UCLA UniCamp is the official student charity of the University of California, Los Angeles. UniCamp operates as an independently funded non-profit organization linking the University with the community. Each year, UniCamp inspires nearly 1,000 children from underserved families to envision brighter futures by sending them, along with 400 student volunteers, to its residential outdoor summer camp.
