A Message From Evangelina Valadez
Hi! My name is Evangelina (Eva) Valadez, and I am a fourth-year Biology student at UCLA on the pre-med track. This year, I have the privilege of serving as a volunteer camp counselor with UCLA UniCamp, where I will spend a week at camp mentoring and supporting youth ages 8–14 from underserved communities, including foster youth.
This is my first year participating in UniCamp, but camp itself has always held a special place in my heart. As a child, attending camp was a transformative experience that helped me grow in confidence, build meaningful connections, and see new possibilities for myself. Because of that experience, I understand how powerful it can be for a young person to have a safe space to learn, grow, and simply enjoy being a kid.
My connection to this mission is deeply personal. I come from an underserved community and have experienced the loss of both of my parents. Those experiences have shaped who I am and strengthened my commitment to serving others. They have also helped me understand the importance of having supportive adults, strong community, and opportunities that allow young people to thrive despite the challenges they may face.
UniCamp's mission aligns closely with my values and my future goals as a physician. I hope to dedicate my career to caring for and advocating for underserved communities, and UniCamp gives me the opportunity to begin that work by creating meaningful experiences for youth today.
Any contribution, no matter the amount, helps provide camp scholarships and life-changing opportunities for these incredible young people. Thank you for supporting this mission and helping make camp possible for a child who deserves the chance to learn, grow, and create lasting memories.
In Support of UCLA UniCamp
UCLA UniCamp is the official student charity of the University of California, Los Angeles. UniCamp operates as an independently funded non-profit organization linking the University with the community. Each year, UniCamp inspires nearly 1,000 children from underserved families to envision brighter futures by sending them, along with 400 student volunteers, to its residential outdoor summer camp.
