A Message From Emma Carey
Hi friends! This is Emma, but up the mountain, I go by Oso. 🐻
I wanted to share a little more about how UniCamp has shaped my college experience and why I’m so passionate about it. I joined UniCamp last year as a sophomore, hoping to find community and get more involved on campus. If you know me, you know I’ve always dreamed of being a summer camp counselor.
With UniCamp, I get to live out that dream and stay on track with my career goals. It’s been the best of both worlds, and so much more. This organization has taught me patience, resilience, and what it truly means to show up for others. The people I’ve met and worked with inspire me daily.
Our camp is unique. Yes, it’s full of laughter, games, and classic camp fun, but it's also a place where kids can be vulnerable, build confidence, and experience something new, both physically and emotionally. It’s a space where they can disconnect from the challenges they face down the mountain and just be.
Last year, I worked as an Alpine Specialist. Watching campers face their fear of heights, place trust in me and my co-counselor, and push themselves to the top of the tower was one of my favorite parts of the week. What also stuck with me was seeing how the older campers grew throughout the week. By the end, they were stepping up, belaying younger campers, offering encouragement, and showing true leadership. That growth and trust built in just a few days is what pushed me to return this year as a WALL (Wilderness Adventures in Leadership and Learning) advisor.
Being part of this team is something I’m endlessly grateful for. And now, I’m raising funds to help make this experience possible for the campers we serve. Every donation, no matter the size, directly supports getting a kid to camp and giving them a week that could change their life.
Thanks so much for reading and supporting!
With love,
Oso 🩵
