A Message From Alex "Deadly Sloth" Kim
Hello, Deadly Sloth is back at Unicamp as a Climb advisor this year to finish my 11 year journey with a bang, because Unicamp means so much to me. I will be leading a group of high schoolers into San Bernadino National Forest to do introductory outdoor rock climbing.
What is UCLA Unicamp, you may ask?
UCLA UniCamp is the official student charity of the UCLA.
Since its founding in 1934, UCLA UniCamp has transformed the lives of hundreds of campers every year by exposing them to the world far from urban Los Angeles.
UCLA UniCamp is so much more than summer camp, UniCamp operates as an independently funded non-profit organization that connects the UCLA with the community.
Each year, UniCamp inspires over 1,200 children from low-income families to envision brighter futures by sending them, along with 500 student volunteers, to its residential outdoor summer camp.
UniCamp has served over 60,000 youth and over 10,000 volunteers over the past 89 years. For 89 years, counselors at Unicamp have learned that service to others changes their own lives.
Unicamp empowers UCLA volunteers to become community leaders, and creating opportunities for Community Leaders to contribute to the successful development of today’s underserved kids.
Because of UniCamp, both volunteers and campers have a chance to: Lead, Play, Learn.
Children in LA have a hard time seeing the stars or listening to a flowing river as they go to bed.
Unicamp offers the chance to experience nature while getting away from the stress of everyday life in the city.
Unicamp lets us breathe fresh air and drink clean water and stop trying to be cool and just be a kid.
Plain and simple, camp is a place where you can reinvent yourself, meet new friends and just have fun.
------------------------------------------------------------
I did Unicamp originally because I love being outdoors, love helping people and I heard it was one of most popular UCLA traditions (if you know me, you know I am a full of school spirit and love to keep traditions going.) and you could do all 3 at Unicamp.
Unicamp definitely met all of my expectations and went above and beyond. As mentioned above, I have learned that service to others truly changes my own life.
Helping others give me strength, as well as happiness and motivation to create a better future for everybody. I strive so I can be in a place to give.
Without any exaggeration, Unicamp is one of the biggest reasons why I am where I am today in the field of higher education, and it adds my life much happiness.
Is Unicamp always fun and games? Definitely not. As fun as it can be, it can also be a huge challenge with many hardships and unexpected situations.
But I keep doing it even years after I graduated because Unicamp means so much to me, Camp River Glen always has a special place in my heart and Woodsey Magic is truly a magic I can't explain with words.
So, would you please help me to change more lives?
If you are willing to help, please consider donating, or at least share my campaign for me as many times & often as you can!
Any amount would definitely help, but my goal is fundraising $1,200 to subsidize the kids' cost to attend this amazing camp.
Thank you so much for reading, y'all mean so much to me :)
