A Message From Darlene Garcia
Hi! My name is Darlene Garcia and I am volunteering at a wonderful program called UniCamp. From July 17 to July 24, I will be a camp counselor with this organization in order to serve underserved youth.
UniCamp is UCLA's official student charity!! It is a non-profit and every year, they give children an opportunity to experience summer camp for a week. Many of the campers come from underserved communities so it gives us a chance to impact them in a meaningful way. It is super exciting because many of these kids have never had an experience like this before. As a result, camp is a very new and adventurous place for them that introduces them to activities they have never done before.
To send a child to camp, the price costs about $550. HOWEVER, we as volunteers subsidize the cost through fundraising! This allows children from low-income families be able to attend camp and have the unique experiences camp offers.
When I was in elementary, I remember looking at flyers that were looking for students interested in an arts & craft summer camp. Unfortunately, I was never able to attend due to its inaccessibility and costs. That is why I stand by UniCamp's goals and cause as they allow underserved youth the opportunity to attend. I have attended my training for UniCamp and got the opportunity to work alongside many wonderful camp counselors in the making. I’m super excited to bond with my campers and watch as they have fun!
Any amount you are willing to donate is very valuable. Here is UniCamp’s informational video, it would be awesome if you check it out!
In Support of UCLA UniCamp
UCLA UniCamp is the official student charity of the University of California, Los Angeles. UniCamp operates as an independently funded non-profit organization linking the University with the community. Each year, UniCamp inspires nearly 1,000 children from underserved families to envision brighter futures by sending them, along with 400 student volunteers, to its residential outdoor summer camp.
