This summer 2015, I am going to be volunteering again with an organization that has been dear to my college experience, UCLA UniCamp. UCLA UniCamp is UCLA's official student charity, and it gives children from low-income families an opportunity to attend summer camp for a week, where they are exposed to fun new experiences. This year, I am going to be a part of WALL (Wilderness Adventures in Leadership and Learning), in which I will be taking a group of campers on a 26 mile hike over 4 days and 3 nights in an effort to summit Mount San Gorgonio, the tallest peak in Southern California. To keep costs low for the campers, I am aiming to fundraise $2015. My fundraising will be going towards transportation up and down the mountain, food, Wilderness First-aid Responder (OA) guides, and maintenance and upkeep on the gear. Any support is much appreciated! This will be my 4th and possibly my final year volunteering with UCLA UniCamp. UniCamp has been around since 1934 and always strives to make genuine connections between UCLA student volunteers and the thousands of under-served youth around Los Angeles. I have personally seen first hand how much a difference one week could make in a camper’s life – they have a week to escape any stresses of normal everyday life and experience new things, make new friends, and have fun. I have seen campers come away from camp with newfound confidence, inspired to do well in school and accomplish their dreams. Imagine how much the experience of hiking up to the tallest peak in California and overcoming the hardships and challenges along the way could inspire and empower a camper? UCLA UniCamp has also had a profound effect on my own life, transforming me into more of a leader and introducing me to some of the most amazing people I have ever met.
