A Message From Amanda Garza
Hello everyone!!
I had the honor and chance to volunteer to this wonderful non-profit again. For those of you who do not know, UCLA Unicamp is a non-profit organization that helps undeserved youth in the general Los Angeles area enjoy a week of summer camp in the San Bernardino Mountains. It has been serving the youth of the community since 1934! :)
Within the camp, there is an Older Camper Program (OCP) that specifically encourages teens in the greater Los Angeles area to be leaders at camp and in their communities. Our mission in Unicorps is to provide leadership skills that the campers could use at camp and outside of it. This specific program will teach the campers responsibilities up at camp and to become role models to the Classic Campers.
Along with the journey, the campers are at the age where they will be transitioning from high school to college or have thought about the idea. As volunteers, we are there to provide as much information as possible to help them transition and strive for a higher education while also answering any questions they have about college.
I was a previous camper for about seven years and this will be my third year volunteering as a counselor. I always tell myself that this year will be the last but I just can't seem to let go of the place that once helped me escape and shape me into the person I am today. My previous counselors went through a lot for me to have an amazing experience up at Camp River Glen and I just want to do the same for the youth today. The video below explains more in depth about the organization and the place I call home.
We are fundraising to subsidize the cost for the campers who cannot come and materials we need for the whole summer. Any donations count!! It'll all add up in the long run! If you cannot donate, share my link with friends, family and co-workers. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
In Support of UCLA UniCamp
UCLA UniCamp is the official student charity of the University of California, Los Angeles. UniCamp operates as an independently funded non-profit organization linking the University with the community. Each year, UniCamp inspires nearly 1,000 children from underserved families to envision brighter futures by sending them, along with 400 student volunteers, to its residential outdoor summer camp.
