A Message From Charissa Nguyen
Hi everyone,
My name is Charissa (aka Sandal) and I'm back for a second year with UCLA UniCamp! As a volunteer I've trained over 75 hours to become counselors to the underserved youth of Los Angeles at a week-long camp this upcoming summer.
My week of camp is called AcademiCamp. AcademiCamp is a hybrid of an academic day camp and residential summer camp. Our initiative is focused on teaching Social Emotional Learning skills to our campers by incorporating SEL pillars into our camp programs and activities. The session is part of the seven-week Mann Middle School UCLA Summer Institute program focusing on addressing the summer learning loss at Horace Mann Middle School. The Institute is designed to engage students in hands-on learning in order to promote critical thinking, academic enrichment, and social development. Before attending camp, campers participate in a rigorous seven week academic intervention day camp to enhance reading, writing and math skills. Campers also have the opportunity to have fun and be themselves through traditional camp activities such as archery, swimming, climbing, mountain biking, hiking, and much more.
Part of my responsibility is to raise $450.00 to support the cost of sending a child to camp. This is where I need your help. I am asking your support, at whatever amount you feel comfortable, to help me reach my goal and to give a child the opportunity to experience what may be their first-ever experience of going to camp.
Thank you,
Charissa

UCLA UniCamp is the official student charity of the University of California, Los Angeles. UniCamp operates as an independently funded non-profit organization linking the University with the community. Each year, UniCamp inspires nearly 1,000 children from underserved families to envision brighter futures by sending them, along with 400 student volunteers, to its residential outdoor summer camp.
