A Message From Monica (Mini Mammoth) Aguilar Flores-Garcia
Hi everyone! My name is Monica Flores-Garcia (Mini Mammoth) and this summer I’ve been given an incredible opportunity to work with UCLA’s oldest student-run charity UniCamp! Since 1934, this organization has given children from all over Los Angeles the opportunity to enjoy and experience everything nature has to offer during a week-long summer camp in San Bernardino's Camp River Glen.
Unicamp is really fun! Campers will be able to participate in different activities such as singing, swimming, games, and arts and crafts each day. What makes UniCamp unique is that each week of camp focuses on a particular topic and skills. So, as they enjoy camp activities, kids are simultaneously taught tons of valuable skills they can utilize in their everyday lives. Skills on how to become incredible leaders or build strong relationships are just a few of Unicamp’s core lessons.
I’m proud to be a part of a session of the camp called AcademiCamp! This session aims to empower our campers through education by what’s known as SEL. SEL stands for Social Emotional Learning and is a key component in academic success. We’re taught that studying hard and attending class regularly is what will earn us good grades. This is partly true. Building a healthy mind and being able to have good interactions with others are also what help us thrive in a classroom. As a student who has struggled with mental health issues, being able to help kids learn lessons that have the potential to assist them both in and out of academics means the world to me. It's an honor to be able to play a part in teaching kids that their well being is a priority, that they’re special and important, and that they’re more than capable to achieve their goals. It's these lessons that can make all the difference in a child’s life.
UCLA’s UniCamp creates unforgettable experiences! Many of our campers come from underserved communities where there isn’t always the opportunity to go camping. If you can and would like to, you could help drastically reduce the cost of camp by donating to my fundraiser! This would allow more kids to be able to attend and enjoy UniCamp. I would greatly appreciate it and so would our campers! Any amount will help create an amazing week of camp and every amount will change a child’s life. Thank you!

UCLA UniCamp is the official student charity of the University of California, Los Angeles. UniCamp operates as an independently funded non-profit organization linking the University with the community. Each year, UniCamp inspires nearly 1,000 children from underserved families to envision brighter futures by sending them, along with 400 student volunteers, to its residential outdoor summer camp.
