A Message From Magaly 'Serendipity' Mendez
Hi Friends!
I am Serendipity (formerly known as UCLAlover). Let me tell you about a camp that became part of my life back in 2007 as a camper who greatly benefited from the love and friendships I made every time i returned.
UCLA UniCamp is UCLA's official student charity. Established in 1934, it is one of UCLA's longest surviving traditions. Our mission is to take kids that can qualify for free/reduced lunches in the Greater Los Angeles Area up to camp for a week. Since a lot of these kids never really get to see nature, and be away from the city, UniCamp provides a very unique and unforgettable experience.
At Camp River Glen, our campsite near Big Bear, we have rotations like archery, mountain biking, rock climbing, and traditional camp things like arts and craft, camp songs and games. Along with that, we have other unforgettable experiences like night campfires, hikes and multitudes of stars at night. It's a chance for the kids to just be kids, to not have to worry about anything that might be going on in the city, to just have fun. Academicamp is the session within UCLA Unicamp that will focus on having conversations about social justice with teens from all over California during that week of camp. Camp provided me with a safe space away from home to connect with other kids, and if giving all that love and positivity to one another isn’t happiness, I don’t know what is!
I would not have been able to afford camp if it wasn’t thanks to the students who fundraised and dedicated so much of their time to get me there. We all train 100 hours during the spring quarter. In addition to all of the volunteer hours, we also fundraise. A week of camp costs roughly $600 for each camper. This costs covers food, shelter, and any other supplies for seven days and six nights. However, we subsidize this cost, so that most of our campers only pay a fee of $85, if anything. With that said, we all raise a minimum of $5000 each.
I am asking you to help me reach my goal and help send these kids up for an amazing experience at camp! I understand that not everyone has the financial stability to be able to donate, but if you could help me fundraise in any way you can either it be through donations, sharing my link, or even sending me warm fuzzies I would really appreciate it!!! Thank you friends :)
