Hello hello! :) This year, I decided to apply for an opportunity that I had been looking forward to ever since my first year of college— and that’s being a counselor for UCLA’s UNICAMP! UNICAMP is UCLA’s official student charity that takes children from low-income families in underserved areas of Los Angeles and brings them to a week-long camp over the summer. Growing up, a few of my favorite memories were sixth grade camp and camping with my youth group. To me, these adventures were an escape from reality. Being forced to disconnect from technology allowed me to realize how beautiful and truly fascinating the world is. And I got to see actual stars at night!! These, and many more, are a few reasons why I am so passionate about participating in UNICAMP. Most of the kids that we sponsor have lived in Los Angeles their entire lives, and have never been in the wilderness or known what it feels like to look up at night and see stars. Most importantly, UNICAMP gives kids the chance to be kids— to have fun with one another and with nature— without the distractions of iPads or TVs or video games. Also, my session will be focused on Health, Nutrition, and Fitness, so we will be sponsoring a number of overweight/obese children, teaching them how to stay healthy and empowering them to take control of their wellbeing! However, it takes around $625 to bring a camper to camp, and since we focus on low-income, underserved areas, we try to fund as much as we can so we can give these kids the opportunity to attend. As a counselor, my fundraising goal is $500, which will go entirely to sending a camper to camp. This is where I need your help!
