A Message From Halena Ngo
Hello to all my friends and family!
Since I first started my time as an undergrad 4 years ago, UniCamp has been the most rewarding philanthropic effort I've been apart of. When I first volunteered with UniCamp as a freshman student, I had very limited experience directly overseeing and programming activities for children. For one quarter, as I grew closer and closer to my session, I watched something amazing happen-- a bunch of motivated, diverse, funny, and passionate young students were able to put together a week of camp that was life-changing for its participants, who were aged from 10 to 18 years old.
It is so important today that our students get the extracurricular education they are interested in, whether that be in the arts or music or recreational activities. Lower income students are particularly disadvantaged when it comes to these areas, though it is generally agreed upon that extracurricular activities are a vital factor in the development of confidence and leadership in high schoolers. That's why my session and I are pledging to raise $450 each. The money will cover the cost of camp, which includes food, transportation, and materials needed for the programs we have worked so hard to carry out. These include rotations in an array of activities, such as mountain biking, swimming, arts and crafts, science experiments, and archery to name a few.
This year, my session and I are gearing up to teach our campers about social justice and responsibility. We have an ambitious aim to cover subjects such as sexual orientation, gender identity, race, and what these subjects signify particularly for minorities in the United States. Since our campers will all be high-school age, we hope to provide them the tools they need to comfortably come to understand their own identity and apply it in whatever way they choose for their time in college.
